Aiming to promote hockey at grassroots level, Director General Sports Punjab Dr Asif Tufail chaired an important meeting of all Divisional Sports Officers and District Sports Officers on Zoom Link at National Hockey Stadium on Friday.
Director Sports Yasmeen Akhtar, Director Admin Ejaz Munir, Divisional Sports Officer Lahore Tariq Khanzada, Assistant Director M Waseem and District Sports Officer Lahore Tanveer Shah attended the key meeting in person while all Divisional Sports Officers and District Sports Officers of the province participated in the meeting through video link.
The status and utilization of hockey turfs of the province, detail of weightlifting clubs and budget for Annual Sports Calendar was discussed in detail during the meeting.
Addressing the meeting, Director General Sports Punjab Dr Asif Tufail said that hockey is our national game and Sports Board Punjab will utilize all available resources for regaining lost glory in hockey. He directed all Divisional Sports Officers and District Sports Officers of the province to involve the younger generation in hockey events by launching maximum hockey clubs and academies in their respective areas.
Director General Sports Punjab Dr Asif Tufail enquired from all Divisional Sports Officers and District Sports Officers about the existing hockey turfs and other relevant facilities in their respective areas. He said any kind of issues will be resolved and hurdles will be removed for the promotion of hockey.
In the briefing, the meeting was told that there are 14 operational hockey turfs in the province which include Hockey Stadium in Gojra, National Hockey Stadium Lahore, Ground-2 Hockey Stadium Lahore, Shahnaz Sheikh Hockey Stadium Rawalpindi, Khushab, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Attock, Gakhar Sports Arena Gujranwala, Jhang, DG Khan, Multan and Dring Stadium Bahawalpur.
Moreover, there are five mini hockey turfs which are operational at different venues in the province. The five mini hockey turfs include Mini Hockey Stadium at Waqar un Nisa College for Women Rawalpindi, Mini Hockey Stadium APS Model High School, Lahore, Mini Astroturf Hockey Haider Stadium, Bahawalpur, Mini Hockey ground at Nanakpur, Pakpattan and Mini Hockey ground at Pirmahal.
The meeting was told that there are five on-going hockey turfs in the province which will be completed in ADP 2023-24. These ADP schemes include Construction of practice pitches and development of hockey ground at Main stadium Faisalabad, 7x7 Floodlit Synthetic hockey turf at Abbasia Sports Complex, Rahimyar Khan (Mini Turf), construction of 7-side hockey astro turf at Dhobi Ghat Murree (Mini Turf), Rehabilitation of Nawaz Sharif Hockey Ground at Sialkot and hockey ground adjacent to Sports Stadium, Sargodha.
Director General Sports Punjab Dr Asif Tufail directed the officers concerned to complete these ADP schemes as early as possible.
